Biography

Usui Pass: The Origin of a Legend (1956-1977)

Keiichi Tsuchiya was born on January 30, 1956 in Tōmi, Nagano, Japan. At 16, inspired by Kunimitsu Takahashi sliding a Hakosuka GT-R in races, he began mastering Usui Pass - the touge where he forged his legend. Unlike drivers from wealthy families, Tsuchiya learned on the streets, instinctively developing drift on the treacherous mountain roads of his region.

AE86 & 'Drift King': The Explosion (1977-1990)

• 1977: Professional debut at Fuji Freshman (Nissan Sunny → Toyota Starlet → AE86)
• 1984: 6 consecutive wins at Fuji Freshman with AE86
• 1985: JTCC Class 3 Champion (Toyota Corolla Levin AE86)
• 1987: 'Pluspy' Video - Documented illegal racing at Usui Pass. Underground phenomenon that catapulted him to worldwide fame. Cost him temporary suspension but made him a cultural icon
• "Drift King": Named by Car Boy magazine seeing him slide the AE86 with surgical precision

World Elite: JGTC, Le Mans & NASCAR (1992-2004)

Team Taisan (1992-1993): Teammate with his hero Kunimitsu Takahashi driving R32 GT-R
Team Kunimitsu (1994-1995): Le Mans 1995 GT2 victory with NSX - First 100% Japanese team to achieve it (8th overall)
Le Mans 1998: 9th overall with Toyota GT-One

NASCAR (1996-1999): Suzuka Thunder 100 & Twin Ring Motegi

Cultural Legacy & Retirement (1995-Present)

Today (69 years): Drift ambassador. Preserves his 2 AE86s with +500,000 km each - "They're part of my soul"

His philosophy: Smooth, controlled, precise drift - never aggressive. The technique that revolutionized sports driving.

Personality

Charismatic and humble despite his legendary status. A perfectionist who never stops learning, always willing to share knowledge with younger drivers. His philosophy is based on respect for the car and the road, just like Takumi in Initial D.

Philosophy

"Drifting is an art that requires deep connection between driver and machine. True drift must be smooth, controlled and precise, never aggressive. This 'smooth drift' philosophy is exactly what we see in Takumi Fujiwara in Initial D."
